Purse Tutorial: “Cute ‘n Sassy” Zippered Bag

Ruffled Zipper Bag/Clutch

A small zippered bag is always useful, and is sometimes a necessity! Corralling small things in large handbags or totes is a challenge. Sometimes you just want a small clutch-type bag for an evening out. And this bag, when made as a gift, is a lovely and useful surprise!

This zippered bag is so cute and versatile—-it’s the solution to many small-bag needs!

Dressed up in brocade or silk it makes a great little evening clutch. Young ladies love it for proms and dances, too (if you’re making the dress, make a bag to match!) Aren’t the ruffles beautiful? They are a great opportunity to mix & match your fabrics.

In cottons or denim this zip bag is great for everyday—for a nice spot to keep keys and a lipstick, or to hold supplies like pens or a measuring tape! (Cotton or poly bags can be machine washed, too!)

This is the perfect, beautiful make-up bag to carry in your purse, too. I make them as a hostess gift, Christmas gift, or a girlfriend’s birthday. These (right) were made with decorator fabric samples.

This zippered bag’s pleated construction gives it an important feature that most others don’t: it sits flat and opens widely when unzipped. I love that I can open it and see everything that’s inside, unlike most flat zippered bags.

Illustrated purse instructions

The simple step-by-step tutorial directions are fully illustrated with close-up photographs to show the construction clearly. There is no pattern piece–a square or rectangle 10″ or larger will work. It’s fun to make bags in different sizes. The construction is intermediate difficulty due to the strip of tightly gathered ruffles.

If stash-busting is your goal, this bag pattern is a great one! The directions call for 2 10″ squares of fabric, plus 2 strips for the ruffles. The finished bag from a 10″ square is 8 1/2″ wide and about 3-4″ deep—it’s a rounded shape because of the pleated ends.

This ruffled zippered bag tutorial is a downloadable PDF. The instructions will be sent to your email address upon receipt of your payment (Amazon or Paypal).
